A Successful Plan

The Bible says, "Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed" (Proverbs 16:3).  That doesn't mean you ask God to bless the plan you have or intend to implement for your life.  It means you follow Jesus' example and humbly lay aside your personal plans and desires so that God's Will is done (Matthew 6:10)."  This relates to weight loss and eating disorders as well as every other aspect of your life.

For example, in the case of those who are overweight, your initial plan was to eat what you wanted whenever you wanted.  It resulted in your overweight condition and will, if it hasn't already, lead to your declining health.  Consequently, you planned to lose the weight the quick and easy way by taking miracle pills, getting lap bands, and drinking smoothies.  When that didn't work, you hired personal trainers, joined fitness clubs, and enrolled in weight loss programs.  Though you may have had a brief measure of success, none of your plans have succeeded because they were not in line with God's Will.  The same result occurs for those who starve themselves due to anorexia nervosa or who become malnourished due to orthorexia.  Eventually, you compromise your health, and in the worst case scenario, instead of achieving what you hoped to accomplish, you succumb to the eating disorder and end up in an early grave.

What is God's Will when it comes to eating and drinking?  In the Book of Leviticus, God explained to the Israelites that the food restrictions were imposed on them so that they would "be holy because I am holy" (Leviticus 20:26).  Although God lifted the food restrictions in the New Testament, He confirmed His command to eat for His glory as a reflection of His holiness.  "So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).

Likewise, God commanded Adam in the Garden of Eden to take care of the earth. This commandment extended to Adam's flesh, which was created from the earth, as Adam's name comes from the word "adamah" which means earth or ground (Genesis 1:25, 28, 2:15).  The commandment was reaffirmed in the New Testament in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 where God explicitly states to honor Him with our bodies, and again in 1 Corinthians 9:27, which states, “But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection.”  The bottom line is this, your plan is to lose weight, to stop bingeing, to stop starving yourself, to achieve a balanced, healthy way of eating instead of your vain pursuit of food perfection.  If you want your plans to succeed, then you must commit the GENERAL plan to the Lord and ask Him for His guidance.  Then, and most importantly, you must submit to His Will in obedience even if it means casting aside your plan altogether in order to adopt the Lord’s plan as your own.
