A Mind to Work

During the 12-week EAW Health and Fitness Course, we study the Book of Nehemiah. In Nehemiah 4:6, the Jewish remnant were about to experience a miracle from God because "the people had a mind to work."  What was the miracle?  In just 52 DAYS, the Jews miraculously rebuilt the wall around the City of Jerusalem, which had been completely destroyed by the Babylonians (Nehemiah 6:15)!  Although there was opposition from their enemies, the Jewish remnant diligently worked to obey God's command to rebuild.  They kept their focus even though they had to work with one hand while holding a weapon to fend off attacks with the other.

In Ephesians 6, God commands us to daily put on the whole armor of God so that we, too, can stand strong against the evil that comes against us as we labor for Him.  This includes your labor to rebuild and repair the damage you've done to the temple of the Holy Spirit, which is your body.  God expects you to have a mind to work and be dressed for warfare with the opposition that's coming.  He DOES NOT give you permission to quit under any circumstances.  On the contrary, His unwavering command to you is this: "Go up into the mountains and bring down timber.  Build my house (the temple of the Holy Spirit) so that I might take pleasure in it and be honored!" Haggai 1:8

Parental Discipline

Every good parent knows that disciplining a child is a very important part of parenting.  However, people often have a negative view of discipline because they associate it with punishment and physical abuse.  Most parents will tell you that the reality of disciplining a child is much different.  On the one hand, it's true that discipline often incorporates punishment to correct disobedient behavior.  However, the primary purpose of discipline is to instruct or train your child about appropriate behavior in the home and in society, to properly respond to positive and negative circumstances, to develop coping skills, to understand the difference between right and wrong behavior, and to be able to persevere as they endure life's struggles.  The overwhelming majority of these things aren't beaten into a child.  On the contrary, discipline is basically teaching, and a parent's primary responsibility is to teach his or her child what is necessary to live a long, healthy, and peaceful life.
Accordingly, a child's home training should touch upon every aspect of life as the child matures, including eating and drinking for the glory of God.  However, this discipline seems to have been lost quite some time ago.  Most churches no longer teach the biblical principles regarding the body, dieting, or maintaining a healthy lifestyle for the glory of the Lord.  Consequently, parents no longer teach their children about the sin of gluttony.  Likewise, even secular instructions about eating fruits and vegetables and preparing healthy, home cooked meals are no longer the norm.  Instead, people eat out very often, cooking is becoming an archaic art form, and children who demand fast food are given it.  And they are suffering because of it.
Children are diagnosed every day with hypertension, anorexia nervosa, Type II diabetes, bulimia nervosa, and even fatty liver disease.  Consequently, they are dying from obesity related diseases and complications from eating disorders earlier in life at alarming rates.  As a result, this generation is on track to have a shorter lifespan than the ones before it because the parents, their children, and their families are being destroyed from a lack of knowledge (Hosea 4:6) and discipline.  If you're ready to reclaim the biblical knowledge and disciplines of healthy eating and drinking habits for yourself and your family, register today for the Eating as an Act of Worship Kidz Initiative! Classes for overweight children and their families begin on Tuesday, January 2nd at 6:00 pm CST! The class is FREE! Resolve to Change

Romans 12:2 says, "Be ye changed by the renewing of your mind," and then you will know the perfect will of God.  In other words, change always starts within us.  Specifically, we have to first choose to do something different, but humans often change their minds again and revert to their old habits.  This is probably the way it has been for you in terms of weight loss and eating disorders up to this point.  You make up your mind (resolve) to start a new diet and exercise regimen, but your resolution falters shortly after you begin, if you ever truly get started at all.

God's Word says, "A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways (James 1:8)."  If you're honest with yourself, you can admit this is true in terms of your weight loss efforts and entanglement with eating disorders.  Not only do you constantly change your mind about starting a new diet or going to inpatient treatment, but you also vacillate between sticking with the plan, following the advice of your therapist, giving in to your cravings to eat unhealthy foods, and making excuses not to exercise.   The instability is further evident by the excess weight you carry, changes in how you view yourself, how you relate to others, and how your health is, or eventually will be, affected.  Nevertheless, God can and will provide the stability you need in this area of your life when you change your mind and adopt His perspective of your issue with weight and eating disorders.

The choice is yours as to whether or not you trust God and obey His Will. Jesus said, "He who loves Me obeys My commands (John 14:21)." When you read and obey His Word as it pertains to the body, dieting, exercising, and maintaining a healthy body, you discover His good and pleasing will for your life in regard to food. Then you have the right to ask for the Holy Spirit's empowerment to succeed where you previously and repeatedly failed in the past. That's a request God can honor because seeking Him and His righteousness first (Matthew 6:33) in all things proves you now have the correct motivation for losing weight and being free of eating disorders.  In other words,"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God (1 Corinthians 10:31)."

If you’re ready to finally win the eating disorder and weight loss war through Christ, then order your copy of the Eating as an Act of Worship Teacher’s Edition TODAY!  In the book, you will learn the biblical principles regarding the body, dieting, exercising, and maintaining a healthy body for the glory of God!  As you apply the principles to your life, the Holy Spirit will empower you to do what you have been unable to do for yourself and succeed where so many others have failed!  Order your copy of the Eating as an Act of Worship Teacher’s Edition online NOW at Amazon.com.
